To whom it may concern:
My name is Calpurnia Virginia Tate, of Fentress, Texas, and I am writing you to request a vacation on the island of Norrhamn, Sweden. While I am not overly familiar with the ways of the Swedes, I understand that this is a place where qualified individuals can rest and relax in the comfort of appointed cabins, for as long as they might need.
If I may be candid, and your instructions did say to be, I could use a significant break from home and especially from my mother. I am the only girl out of her seven children, and you would not be wrong to say that she keeps a weather eye on me. Mother is bound and determined that I should be a proper lady just the way she is, with all the same interests, habits, and general inclinations. Her goal is that I should grow up to be confined to a house and husband, and to never, ever go to college.
I want to be a veterinarian, and I am already a useful hand when it comes to farm animals and wild creatures. My grandfather has been educating me in the ways of the sciences for some time now, and I fancy myself a pretty good naturalist when it comes down to it. I know how to observe and to note-take and to illustrate my observations. I have done research in my grandfather's library on occasion, and while I would not consider myself talented in the realm of the domestic arts, I can sew and tat in a pinch.
I have no intention of running away permanently, especially considering that I do not know a lick of Swedish and would not be able to make a life for myself off of your island. However, I would like to see a new place, and to find out what I can about your island's flora and fauna. I would especially like to see snow, as I have only once before in my life, on New Year's Day.
I hope you will consider my application.
With all respect,
Yours very sincerely,
Calpurnia Virginia Tate
P.S. You may call me Callie Vee if you like. Everybody else does.
